About Nashwan Alhadaay
Nashwan was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1984. Since childhood he has been interested in photography and painting which he combines in his work. In 1990 he moved with his family to Bartella, in the Nineveh Plains in northern Iraq because of the increasingly unsafe situation in Baghdad. Later, he lived and worked in Erbil as a photographer. In the summer of 2014, when ISIS attacked the Nineveh Plains, his family fled the family home in Bartella. Nashwan then held an exhibition in Erbil to raise funds for the needy families who fled ISIS.
It was not until 2016 that Nashwan visited his house in Bartella, immediately after it was retaken from ISIS.
He made several trips to his hometown Bartella and to Qaraqosh and Karamlesh, photographing the destruction perpetrated by ISIS when it occupied these places. The photographs exhibited were included in an earlier private exhibition ‘Finding Traces of War – Searching for Traces of Art’. Nashwan now lives with his wife in Germany.
